Graduate Marine Geologist

 

CMS GeoScience Ltd is looking for Graduate Marine Geologist to join the team, primarily based in our office near Falmouth, Cornwall although hybrid option may be considered.

 

Our geotechnical team specialise in the collection of seabed samples from all around the UK and into Europe for a variety of marine companies ranging from ports & harbours to offshore energy developments, civil engineering projects through to dredging and marine mining / extractive industries.  Our activities allow our clients to properly evaluate the physical and any contaminant characteristics of the seabed and resources prior to the commencement of developments, extraction or infrastructure maintenance activities.

 

You will become a key member of this specialised team and will be trained to be able to  take responsibility for leading both a variety of tasks in the field related to offshore and nearshore site investigations including equipment operation, interpretation of results and reporting as well as including autonomous and remote data collection and reviewing company & 3rd party geophysical data to develop local and regional sedimentary environment models for resource prospecting activities.

 

This role will primarily be based in our South West offices near Falmouth, Cornwall and will demand a flexible approach towards your working locations.

 

You will typically be required to work offshore for several weeks at a time throughout the year, in demanding marine environments, to operate geotechnical and geophysical equipment, acquire data, perform in-situ tests and to collect soil and/or rock samples. You will also have the opportunity to work around the globe on various 3rd party contracts as required. Tidal and coastal/inshore working demands a flexible approach to working patterns.

 

When not offshore you will be working to review and interpret data in order to compile accurate reports for our clients, develop new service offerings and improve and expand not only the quantity but also the type of work the Company undertakes.  You will also work from our labs in Plymouth or Lowestoft, with travel / temporary accommodation provided as required.

What would a typical week involve?

You will be challenged on a daily basis and encouraged to perform to the highest standards at all times. No two days will ever be the same but typically you will be helping to prepare and mobilise for the next fieldwork campaign, ensuring all the necessary paperwork and procedures have been followed and completed: assisting with the movement of the equipment to deploy onto the ship being used: working offshore assisting in the operation of the equipment, and reporting back daily to the client and the project manager.

 

You will be required to attend company operational meetings and report as required as well as assisting with external networking or client meetings as appropriate.

What do we need from you?

  • Familiarity with UK site investigation techniques and practise and to be able to log soils and rock to BS 5930 (2015+) and/or

  • A Degree in Geotechnical Engineering, Engineering Geology, Marine Geology & Geophysics or similar

  • A full UK driving licence

  • Currently eligible to work in the UK

  • A valid offshore medical certificate

  • Strong IT skills, especially in Microsoft 365 Suite

  • Strong technical writing skills

  • Fluent in spoken and written English

 

Nice to have but not essential:

  • Experience of geotechnical  investigations

  • Software / programme experience

  • Offshore / marine experience and interests

  • Mechanical & ‘hands-on’ aptitude
