Vibrocoring: Unrivalled Performance in Offshore Geotechnical Investigations
CMS GeoScience owns and operates a range of robust and proven vibrocorers, including both high-powered and standard units. Engineered to endure the most challenging offshore conditions, our equipment is specifically designed for precise Geotechnical Site Investigations.
Expert Team & Exceptional Results
Our team of highly skilled geotechnical engineers has built a formidable industry reputation for their competence and experience. This expertise enables us to deliver safe, reliable and cost-effective services to clients worldwide.
Our systems consistently achieve exceptional penetration and recovery statistics, some of the best among high-powered vibrocorers operating in the UK in recent years. With over 30 years of operational experience, we've continuously adapted and redesigned our vibrocore barrels for enhanced reliability, strength and faster deployment turnaround.
Real-Time Precision for Quality Data
All our vibrocoring systems feature a real-time topside display, ensuring accurate deployment and operation. This, combined with the deep operational knowledge of our geotechnical team, delivers an unrivalled package of high-quality, accurate and cost-effective results every time. We're committed to minimising sample disturbance, and the real-time display allows our experienced operators to precisely control each test, stopping once all useful progression is complete.
Geotechnical Site Investigations: Safe, On-Time, On-Budget
At CMS GeoScience, we combine substantial in-house expertise with bespoke equipment to help you flawlessly plan and execute your geotechnical site investigation surveys. Our goal is to ensure you achieve your project objectives – safely, to standard, within budget and on time.
Global Data Acquisition & Deepwater Capabilities
We have the capability to acquire crucial marine geotechnical data in water depths of up to 3,000m. Our comprehensive range of equipment includes:
-
Vibrocorers
-
Piston Corers
-
Box Corers
-
Clam Shell Grabs
-
A full suite of smaller environmental grabs & trawls - Find out more here
Furthermore, we can go up to 20m below the seabed using our advanced seabed penetrometers (CPT).
Expert Team & Flexible Deployment
Our operations are supported by our own reliable and experienced team of marine geotechnical surveyors and technicians. This dedicated team expertly operates and maintains all our geotechnical sampling and coring equipment. We offer flexible deployment options: either from our dedicated survey vessel, MV FlatHolm, or from suitable third-party vessels, depending on your project's needs.
CMS GeoScience provides a complete standalone service for marine geotechnical surveys and seabed sampling operations. Our robust, heavy-duty vibrocorers and CPTs are easily transportable, allowing us to support third-party vessels and projects anywhere in the world.

Geotechnical Survey
Geotechnical marine surveys provide essential information about the seabed before any offshore project goes ahead. Whether it’s for wind turbines, pipelines, cables, ports, infrastructure or environmental studies, our surveys reveal the type, strength, and stability of the ground below the seabed, information critical for designing safe and cost-effective foundations, avoiding hazards, and ensuring long-term stability.

Advantages of using the Datem 5000 CPT system:
-
Detailed sediment profiling at an average of 100m per day
-
Real-time data allowing on-site quality control and monitoring
-
Suited to sampling of clays, soft soils, silts, sand & mining minerals
-
Easily deployed from smaller survey vessels improving cost efficiency
-
A-frame deployment and retrieval improves speed of sample recovery
-
Easily transportable by freight shipment around the globe
Global CPT Site Investigations: Leading with the Datem Neptune 5000
CMS GeoScience stands as a leading marine geotechnical survey company, providing CPT site investigation services across the globe. We own and operate our Datem Neptune 5000 CPT system, ensuring accurate, reliable and cost-effective solutions for a wide range of seabed investigation projects.
Precision Data & Innovative Design
The Neptune 5000 CPT system utilises 5cm² or 10cm² digital Piezocones, offering comprehensive testing including T-bar, ball cone, and dissipation tests. This allows for penetration depths of up to 20m below the seabed (dependent on ground conditions). With real-time data capture and control from the topside vessel, the system delivers highly accurate evaluations of subsoil stratigraphy and the geotechnical and geo-environmental properties of the seabed.
Its innovative, compact, and modular design, comprising rods and a drum, makes the Neptune 5000 CPT easy to deploy from smaller, more cost-effective vessels.
MV Flatholm: Unrivalled Efficiency in a Compact Class
Complementing our CPT capabilities is our own 24m survey vessel, MV Flatholm. Unique in its class for its manoeuvrability and exceptional lifting capacity, MV Flatholm consistently outperforms larger survey vessels in terms of efficiency, speed, and cost, all while maintaining an unwavering commitment to safety.
